Special Report on Managing Information

by on March 10, 2010

The Economist recently published a special report on managing information that should be a must read for everyone in our program.  The iSchool has also identified this as an important report, but I will be the first to raise my hand that I do not check the iSchool web page very often.  You can read the iSchool’s brief summary at this link.  For a digital version of the entire article you can read it at the Economist’s web site.

I have to admit that I have only read half of the article, but already I have found that it helps answer the often asked questions, “What are we learning to do at the iSchool, and why is an MSIM degree is important?”  The article points out that information management is a $100 billion dollar a year industry, and is growing at about 10% per year.  This growth exceeds than the software industry, and the breadth of opportunities is and will be far greater in the future.

A brief look at the table of contents of the report:

  • All too much.  Monstrous amounts of data.
  • A different game.  Information is transforming traditional businesses
  • Clicking for gold.  How internet companies profit from data on the web.
  • The open society.  Governments are letting in the light.
  • Show me.  New ways of visualising data.
  • Needle in a haystack.  The uses of information about information.
  • New rules for big data.  Regulators are having to rethink their brief.
  • Handling the cornucopia.  The best way to deal with all that information is to use machines.

I am hoping that we as a class can continue to have discourse about this article either on this blog or in person.  Let me know if you are interested in organizing a study group around this report.

Yes! This is a great recap of the article, Paul. See also my post on it, Dean Emeritus: a “must-read for iSchoolers.” I link to some other great articles about data management the Economist has recently published:

The article promtpted Sanjeevi to start a discussion on explaining the MSIM program. There are 11 comments so far, and hopefully there will be more.

    Great article Paul.
After Sanjeevi started the discussion, I have started reflecting on what information and information management (as Kevin suggests to reflect on everything we do) is and how that can help make this world a better place to live.
